Website File Naming Conventions
Every file uploaded to an ASCO Website gets a URL and that URL is what search engines, such as Google, use to seek out the most relevant information and deliver it to end users. Extra spaces, underscores, wordsthatruntogether, all of these naming conventions throw search engines off the path of getting to us. Using the following ASCO approved naming conventions will these search engines find your document or image.
Documents
The year indicator is no longer a requirement for file names due to our implementation of the ASCO DAMS for file storage and versioning.
Name files with: Keyword Identifier-Type
Example: asco-board-meeting-agenda.pdf
*Type is optional, but helps identify what is in your file.
Images
Name files with: Year-Keyword Identifer-Type-Dimensions
Example: asco-connection-logo-175x150.jpg
*Type could be headshot or logo.
**Dimensions are important for determining size and helps if you have the same image in different sizes to be used in different areas of the site.
Tips
- Try to name files without dates, unless necessary, and avoid 'Final' or worse, 'Draft' in the name.
- Use dashes instead of spaces, underscores, or special characters.
- It's just a file name. Keep it simple!
